YouTube Thumbnail Size in 2026: Exact Dimensions, Ratio & File Limits
The correct YouTube thumbnail size is 1280×720 pixels, a 16:9 aspect ratio, with a maximum file size of 2MB in JPG, PNG, or GIF format. The minimum width YouTube accepts is 640 pixels. That's the short answer — but if your thumbnails still look soft or get rejected on upload, the details below are usually why.

Shorts thumbnails are different
YouTube Shorts use a vertical 9:16 frame (1080×1920).
